The Hong Kong New Wave - Watching the films and taking notes

Chungking Express notes:

Film based on the movement of China and Hong Kong joining together, based on time and how people were scared.

Mandarin and Cantonese.

Barrier between people.

Half of film is night and half of film is day (city is 24 hours) – director purposely did this.

Smudge-motion which connotes to lack of clarity.

Officer 223 (lack of identity) (1st cop)

Blue (sad – the Hong Kong they knew is about to end).

“We rub shoulders with each other every day” – cramped

Verisimilitude – Documentary relies on this.

THE MIDNIGHT EXPRESS.

The opening sequence of Chungking Express should be considered in the context of Hong Kong in the early 1990’s. It reflects the film’s central themes of separation, uncertainty and reunification.

223 tries to chat the lady in the blonde wig (post modern aesthetics of a femme fatale).

Film is a romance.

"The date on the can tells me I don't have much time left"

"When it hits May 1st, our love will expire"

"Excuse me sir, you do realise this can expires tomorrow"

Fallen Angels notes:

"Find out too much about a person and you lose interest"
